Jindo County Launches Island Tourism Initiative with New Direct Ferry Service to Gwanmae-do

Jindo County in South Jeolla Province is revitalizing island tourism by partnering with major travel agencies to develop tourism products connected to a newly launched direct passenger ferry service to Gwanmae-do. On February 25, the county signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Domestic Travel Agency Association and the Korea Leading Travel Agency Association, with Governor Kim Heesu and approximately 20 travel agency representatives in attendance.

Under the agreement, the organizations will jointly plan and operate tourism packages linked to the direct ferry service, developing both day-trip and multi-day package products while leveraging travel agency networks to promote tourism nationwide. The move comes as Gwanmae-do, known for its exceptional natural scenery including the “Eight Scenic Spots of Gwanmae” and pristine marine areas, has experienced limited accessibility with only twice-daily ferry service, restricting opportunities for day visitors.

The county has invested 4 billion won to build a new 184-ton passenger vessel and plans to commence three daily direct ferry services starting April 1. This increased frequency will significantly improve accessibility to the island, making day trips more practical and enabling longer-stay tourism experiences. The county plans to develop high value-added tourism products that combine Gwanmae-do’s nature tours and marine activities with the culinary and cultural attractions of Jindo’s main island.

Governor Kim Heesu emphasized that the direct ferry is more than transportation infrastructure—it represents a strategic catalyst for revitalizing island tourism. The county plans to conduct familiarization tours and pilot product operations before launching comprehensive promotion and sales of tourism packages upon the ferry service’s commencement. This initiative positions Gwanmae-do and Jindo County as a premier destination for island and marine tourism in Korea.

Goheung County Honors Legacy of Sorok Island’s “Angels” During Visit to Austria

Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, paid tribute to the lifelong dedication of Marianne Stoeger and the late Margaret Pissarek – widely known as the “Angels of Sorok Island” – during an official visit to Austria on the 13th of November.

The delegation met with Marianne’s family, as well as representatives of the Austrian Catholic Women’s Association, which had provided financial support for the nurses’ volunteer work decades earlier.

Marianne and Margaret, both trained nurses, devoted themselves to caring for patients on Sorok Island beginning in 1962, providing compassion and medical service for more than 40 years before returning to Austria in 2005. Margaret passed away in 2023, while Marianne continues to reside in her home country.

The county, which named them honorary citizens in 2016 and provides a monthly pension, is also promoting their legacy through initiatives such as the Marianne and Margaret Sharing Training Center and youth volunteer programs.

Wando County accelerates its plan to create a “sea pension” using seaweed-derived blue carbon

Wando County in South Jeolla Province is accelerating the implementation of its “Wando-type Ocean Pension” project, which returns profits from carbon trading generated through seaweed-based blue carbon to local residents. Momentum for this initiative has increased following the agreement at the 63rd Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting in Lima, Peru last October, where guidelines were adopted recognizing seaweed as a new carbon sink. Once seaweed is officially confirmed as a carbon sink, the project is expected to not only support national greenhouse gas reduction goals and contribute to the government’s 2050 carbon neutrality policy but also generate significant positive economic impacts for the local community.

Wando County Leads Blue Carbon Industrialization

  • Largest seaweed producer in Korea, contributing over 50% of national output
  • Pioneering blue carbon industrialization
  • Pristine marine environment has attracted ongoing collaborations with global organizations like the World Bank and WWF

Toward a Global Seaweed Blue Carbon Hub

The military is currently collaborating with the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (KFRA) on a “Blue Credit Pilot Project,” which converts carbon absorbed by fishermen through aquaculture and management activities into tradable credits, thereby providing an additional source of income. In partnership with private companies, including Hyosung Group and Korea Electric Power Corporation, the military is also implementing a sea forest creation project to expand the habitat of seagrass, a type of blue carbon recognized as biomass. Looking ahead, the military aims to strengthen its policy and technology network with the government, research institutes, and private companies by establishing a dedicated task force and a carbon absorption belt council, with the ultimate goal of becoming a “global seaweed blue carbon hub”.

Shinan County finalizes basic plan for 1,004 MW tidal energy development

Shinan County announced on November 3 that it held the 2nd Tidal Power Generation Project Committee meeting and adopted the Final Report on the Basic Plan for the Promotion of the Shinan County Tidal Power Generation Project.

The plan aims to build a 1,040 MW tidal power facility in the waters around Shinan County, with completion set for 2040.

Tidal power uses the regular movement of seawater to produce clean energy. Unlike solar or wind power, it provides a steady and reliable energy source.

Shinan County plans to carry out the project in stages to adapt to future energy market changes and strengthen the stability of renewable energy supply.

South Korean Delegation Explores Bilbao’s Role as a Sustainable Energy Hub

A delegation from Jeollanam-do Province in South Korea recently visited the Port of Bilbao to gain deeper insights into its transformation into a sustainable energy hub. The port presented its strategic projects in the fields of offshore wind, renewable hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and broader energy transition measures. A central focus was the BilbOPS project, which from 2027 will enable berthed vessels to connect to renewable shore power. This initiative will significantly reduce emissions and noise pollution in the port area and is partly financed through an €80 million loan from the European Investment Bank, underlining its importance for the region’s green transition.

The discussions also addressed the development of green and digital maritime corridors and the establishment of renewable hydrogen connections between Bilbao and Central Europe, reflecting the port’s ambition to become a key player in the European decarbonisation pathway. For the South Korean delegation, Bilbao’s advanced infrastructure, established logistics networks, and strong offshore energy value chain – with leading companies active in the sector – were of particular interest.

The visit not only provided the Korean representatives with a comprehensive overview of Bilbao’s sustainability efforts but also opened the door for future cooperation between Basque and Korean partners in renewable energy and port innovation. By learning from Bilbao’s example, Jeollanam-do aims to strengthen its own offshore wind and clean energy strategies while exploring opportunities for international collaboration.
